What is "Culture"?

It was interesting to hear different people in class to talk about “culture” today. Personally, I always use the word “culture”, but seldom to think what “culture” means to me. “Culture” looks like a meaningless word, which is too general that can have different meanings base on different content. However, it needs to be exists because it can actually use to explain those unexplainable things assist in the society, especially in the United State.

According to “New Keywords” and Wikipedia, Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, beliefs and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. It also called "the way of life for an entire society." For example, regional cultures, national culture, and mass culture always use around in our society. The concept of culture reflects some part of lifestyle that becomes a habit, that human seek to develop or improve themselves. It also refers to forms of difference that operate both within nations and across the relations between them. Such like ethnic cultures and gay culture. As to see, the meaning of "culture" can be so board, and it is hard to have a specify meaning.

Culture to me is just like the meaning of "habit." Sometimes, when people ask about my personal "culture," i really do not know what i should answer. Is that he means my habits? my different between others? or my life development? To me, i usually considerate "culture" same as of "habit". Like, when people talk about Chinese culture, i would think they are actually talking about the "habit" of Chinese people. While they ask about my family culture, I will assume they ask me the habits of my family. Habit needs to be develop, same as “culture” So, culture actually is same kind meanings of habit.

However, the word “culture” needs to be exists as the answer of some unexplainable things in the society. For example, the different habits between different ethnic groups .Since different ethnic group have different habit develop by their generations before. It is hard to make every people understand each other base on their different background. To some people, some of the habit seems never make scene to others. So, normally, the society already accept those difference to explain as different “culture” It did not have specify meaning but actually can solve the arguments, and come out an answer that every different people agree.

All in all, the word "culture" actually is a meaningless word as people overuse it. But, it actually is a word need to be exists as to be the answer of some unexplainable differences or arguments between different people.

"Virtual reality"--believe it or not?

Nowadays, our life seems can not get away from the technology. As the technology improved, the "virtual reality" increases. Thinking about those favorite movies and TV show we enjoy today, how many of them used special effects? In the MSN and facebook, how many “friends” we never meet face to face? Sometimes, although we understand something is not real, we still enjoy in it because those “virtual” things actually can satisfy some part of our wants. “Virtual reality” is the trap of technology. At the time we enjoy the life in technology, we need to be careful about this.

As communication become faster in internet, people changed their communication habit. More and more people like to make friends and communicate through the MSN and Facebook. Different from the traditional face to face meeting, the interaction in MSN and Facebook is limited. Lots of time, we just get know that person by the picture he posted or the things he types. Therefore, what to post and what to type become important as to get a good impression from others. In other words, if you want to be more attractive, and get more friends, you need to be “looking good” in Facebook or MSN. As DieuN said in his blog, “people began to use it as an advertisement of themselves” As to see, it is the consequence of the communication improved, people become more fake, and relationship become more “virtual.” So, can we true the relationship nowadays any more?

Advertisers seem insight the power of the technology, and catch the wants of people. They become spend lots money on Facebook and MSN to promote their products, like Cartier we saw in “New York Times” Moreover, they use many special effects to make their product “looks good,” and attract people to clink their advertisements. Those advertisements always so successful to gain people’s trust by using the “virtual” methods, and make people to buy their product.

As to see, those “virtual reality” is so familiars in internet nowadays. It is no debt that “virtual reality” can somehow satisfy human’s wants, and attract us. However, when we enjoy the life under the technology, we must need to be careful for the trope that it might appear. Remember, things attract might not be truth! Believe it or not, the technology we make out can fool us!

My First Blog

It is my first blog I am writing with the mood of uncertain. Telling the truth, I have waited an afternoon for someone to post the blog, so that I can have a better understanding to write an “appropriate” blog. I checked the meaning “blog ” in Wikipedia, and have the answer that a blog usually maintained regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics of events or video. It is very match with those good examples that professor posts latter on the day about a good blog. Combining the things I read, blog sounds to me is a free place to share my stories and views with others by writing. It should be a place that I like to write more than on the paper because blog has more space to create the writing, and interact with others through comments. It is more alive!

Personally, this class sounds very interesting for me today because it seems so much different from those English classes I have before. It sounds much creative. Honestly, I do not think I am a good writer not only because I am a Biological Sciences student, also, English is not my first language too. However, I like to write (especially using back my own language) and yearn for the feelings that write out what to want. I think once people can freely express in words, writing is amazing, so as English!

Hopefully, this blog will be my good starting for this class, and it will not make people feel pain to read.

I am looking forward to see my improvement process right here in blog!
